British Museum Director to Inaugurate ‘Conservation Centre’ at St. Xavier’s

The Heras Institute of Indian History and Culture, St. Xavier’s College (Autonomous) Mumbai is happy to announce the inauguration of it’s new ‘Conservation Centre’ on Friday, 20th November, 2015 at 5.30 pm by Mr. Neil MacGregorBritish Museum Director and an eminent Historian. This Centre has been made possible by the munificence of the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust.

The Conservation Centre is inter-disciplinary and is open to all the Sciences and Arts departments of the college. The Centre will provide coaching on conservation of materials like stone, paper, rare books, wood, coins, metal and scientific studies related to their materials and technologies. It will also develop and implement strategies for remedial and preventive conservation of the various collections at St. Xavier’s College and The Heras Institute.

The Conservation Centre will be headed by Dr. (Fr.) Roy Pereira, S.J. along with Dr. (Ms.) Joan Dias as the Director of the Heras Institute. Mr. Anupam Sah, Art Conservator and Restoration Expert has been the guiding force behind the establishing of the Centre.

Followed by the inauguration, the 52nd Annual Heras Memorial Lecture titled ‘A Shared History for a Global World’ will be delivered by Mr. Neil MacGregor and moderated by Mr. Sabyasachi Mukherjee, the Director General of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (CSMVS). CSMVS has a well developed Conservation Centre and we look forward to collaborating with them in the future. The lecture will begin at 6 pm in the Multi Media Room (MMR) at St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai.
