STATS   SOCIETY – Report  (2012-13)

The Stats Society was active in organizing a range of events throughout the year.

With great enthusiasm, the department successfully held its first inter-collegiate Statistics Festival, ‘Xstatic’ in September. Xstatic aimed to popularise the wide applications of statistics with interactive sessions including various games, talks and workshops such as:

  1. Presentation Event
  2. Statistics Quiz
  3. Treasure hunt
  4. Stats Pictionary
  5. IPL T20 Fantasy Player Auction
  6. Panel Discussion on the current employment scenario

Xstatic was a huge success which drew participants from colleges all over Mumbai. The department looks forward to making it an even bigger success next year. Apart from organizing Xavier’s own festival, students participated in Statistics festivals of colleges like RuiaCollege and HR College too. The department also got to organise its first seminar in Khandala in December. Our students presented papers on various interesting topics taken from topics beyond our college curriculum and had the opportunity to interact with one another as well as the faculty. It was a wonderful experience which we look forward to continue annually.

In March, the department released the second edition of its Statistics Magazine, The Plot, which consisted of articles written by students from within and outside the Statistics Department and the topics covered ranged from Statistics in cinema and movies to research papers on core Statistics. This year, some of our senior students, took the initiative of holding lectures for other students, on topics like ‘The Use of MS Excel in Statistics’ and ‘The Use of Scientific Calculators’. These were received positively by the students and have been quite helpful in broadening the knowledge in the application of Statistics. The department is proud of the efforts of the core committee of the Stats Society, to provide enriching programmes for our students.

We wish the new committee all the very best and look forward to having an even more exciting year ahead.
