Autonomy

St. Xavier’s College was the first Arts, Science and Commerce degree college, affiliated to the University of Mumbai, to be granted Autonomy by the University Grants Commission. Autonomy was granted by the Commission in May 2010 for a period of 6 years from the academic year 2010-11. The Autonomous status was extended from 2016-17 to 2022-23 following the visit and recommendation of a UGC Expert Committee.

Academic Autonomy places trust in the Faculty of St. Xavier’s College to take up the responsibility of designing its own courses, framing its own syllabi and conducting its own evaluation for its students. Academic Autonomy does not involve Financial Autonomy and the fee structure will be in accordance with that of the University of Mumbai, which will award the Degree to our students.

This is a system of academic freedom mandated by the UGC and implemented in other Universities of the country for about 30 years. St. Xavier’s is grateful for the opportunity of implementing Autonomy, as it will help the College to upgrade the quality of its education, in keeping with the capability of its competent and dedicated faculty and the excellent students it draws from all over the country.

To meet global and national industry demands and offer students newer learning avenues, Postgraduate programmes such as M.A. in Public Policy, M.Sc. in Big Data Analytics, M.Sc. in Physics (Astrophysics) and M.A. in Psychology (Lifespan Counselling) were introduced.

Contemporary Diploma courses such as PG Diploma in Expressive Arts Therapy, PG Diploma in Bioinformatics, Diploma in Translation, Online Diploma in Inter-Religious Traditions and an Online Diploma in Comparative and Applied Ethics are offered as part of the learning experience at St. Xavier’s.
