Examination Policy Under NEP 2020
1. Assessment
The Scheme of Examination is divided into two components for each course of the program: Internal assessment (CIA) and External assessment (End-semester examination).
To pass a course, the student must obtain a minimum of 40% marks in the CIA and ESE together.
End Semester/Additional Theory Question Paper Pattern:
- There will be one question per unit and the allocation of marks will depend on the weightage of the topic.
- All questions shall have a minimum 50% internal choice within the unit.
- Questions may be subdivided into sub-questions.
1.1 Theory: Continuous Internal Assessment (CIA)
- Two CIAs for each course are held during a semester. The CIAs are for 20 marks each for the core courses and 10 marks each for OE, VSC, SEC, VEC and AEC courses.
- The CIA I for core courses is a written test. The modality of CIA-II is at the discretion of the lecturer. It could be either a written exam/assignment/presentation/case study or any other mode deemed appropriate for that course.
- A course (in consultation with the Principal under special circumstances) may club the two CIAs into one (40 marks). In this case, the lecturer concerned must give the Principal the breakup of the continuous marking scheme.
- It is also possible that (in consultation with the Principal) the 20 marks of CIA II could be broken down into assignments running throughout the concerned Semester.
- There will be no retests for CIAs. Any student who misses either CIA I or CIA II or both can acquire the 40% required to pass the course through the 60-mark ESE.
- If a student fails to score 40% in the overall total of a course, such a student will have to appear for the Additional 100 marks Examination (in the subsequent semester) for that course and forego all the CIA marks earned in the ongoing semester in that course.
Special CIA Clause: The Principal will request the concerned Department(s) to hold a Special CIA Test (of one or more courses) for a student, within the same semester, under the following circumstances:
- (a) If the Principal allows a student to represent the College at or to participate in some event (academic/cultural / sports) and this causes the student to miss a CIA Test (of one or more courses)
(Note: The concerned event could be either a couple of weeks before or during the CIA period).
- (b) If just before or during the CIA a bereavement (of an immediate family member) occurs. (Note: In this case, the Death Certificate of the departed and the Parent’s note will have to be given to the College within 2 days of returning to college, for this clause to hold).
For the same student, the Principal will exercise this discretionary power for only one of the two CIAs in a semester.
1.2 Theory: End Semester Examination (ESE)
The ESE is for a maximum of 60 marks of 2-hour duration for core courses (major/ minor) and electives.
The ESE is for a maximum of 30 marks of 1-hour duration for all 2 credit courses.
There will be no centralised end-semester exams for VSC and SEC of B.Sc. / B.Sc (IT).
Assessment of VSC and SEC courses for Science Departments will be conducted in the form of continuous evaluation by the concerned department.
Prior permission is required from the Principal in case a department wishes to conduct a course without a sit-down end-semester examination, before being passed by the BOS of that department.
ESE other than sit-down examinations will be evaluated by internal and external examiners.
All end-semester exam answer sheets will be masked before the assessment.
If a student misses the end semester examination/s while representing the college for HCAP, NCC, NSS or any sports or cultural activity with prior written permission from the Principal, the student will be allowed to appear for supplementary examinations of 60 marks. This examination will be conducted immediately after the regular end-semester examinations.
NOTE: Any student who has missed the regular end-semester examinations on grounds other than those mentioned above will have to appear for Additional examinations of 100 marks in the next semester.
2. Evaluation And Moderation
The moderation system applies to the End Semester Exam only.
There will be a Single Evaluation with moderation for all core/ minor/ elective courses as shown below:
The assessed papers of the top 4 scores of the course per division. 20% of the rest of the assessed papers (per division) on a random basis. If a moderator finds issues (e.g. inconsistency, inflated/deflated marks) with the markings of the Internal Examiner, from the set given for moderation, the option to increase the number of answer booklets to be moderated in that Course could be exercised in consultation with the Principal.
If 30% or more of the moderated papers assessed by a particular examiner of a Course have a change of more than 15% of the total marks assigned to the course, a second moderator will be called for blind moderation. If the change is upheld, all the answer booklets of that group will have to be re-evaluated blind by the second moderator. The re-evaluated marks will be the final score awarded.
3. Passing Norms
To Pass a Theory Course a student is required to obtain a minimum of 40% of the total marks allotted to that Course, which includes the Continuous Internal Assessments (CIA) and End Semester Exams(ESE).
A student will have to appear for the Additional 3-hour 100-mark Examination at the end of the subsequent semester if he/she fails to secure the required minimum of 40 % of the total marks at the Regular Examination.
When a student appears for an Additional 100-mark Examination, the marks secured in that Additional Examination alone will be the marks awarded.
To Pass a Practical Course a student is required to secure a minimum of 40% of the total marks allotted for the concerned Course.
If a student appears for an Additional Practical Examination, the Practical Marks obtained earlier, (except the journal marks), are annulled. The marks obtained at the Additional Practical Examination will be the marks awarded.
A student shall be allowed to keep term for Semester II, IV, VI or VIII irrespective of the number of heads of failure in Semester I, III, V and VII.
Those students who fail in Courses adding up to 12 credits or less, across both semesters in an academic year, will be ‘Allowed to Keep Terms’ (ATKT) and appear for the Additional Examination(s) in the subsequent Semester. Those students who fail in Courses adding up to more than 12 credits across both semesters in an academic year will be declared failed in that academic year.
4. Additional Examination
- A student is eligible for additional examination if:
- the student has been disallowed from appearing for the regular End Semester Examination due to defaulting on the mandated minimum attendance as per section 5.7 of the college handbook– Academic Guidelines Under Autonomy. They, nonetheless, must have a minimum of 50% overall attendance across all courses and 40% in that specific course. Otherwise, they must fulfil the attendance requirements for that semester before being allowed to appear for the ‘Additional End Semester Examination’.
- the student has failed to reach a total of 40 marks out of 100 (or 40% of the total marks in each course) for any reason.
- the student has been permitted by the Principal to represent the college and hence has missed the regular ESE.
- Additional examination is conducted immediately after the end-semester examination.
- Those students who do not register for the Additional Examination within the stipulated period displayed on the college website/ Examination Notice Board will not be permitted to appear for the concerned examination(s).
5. Revaluation Norms:
Applying for an annotated digital copy of the answer book and applying for revaluation are two separate and independent processes.Applying for or obtaining an annotated digital copy is not mandatory for applying for revaluation in the same subject.
Students may choose to apply:Only for Revaluation
Only for Annotated Digital Copy
Or for both, simultaneously
- All updates regarding application procedures, deadlines, and other relevant information will be made available only on the College website. Students are expected to check the website regularly and apply before the due date. No complaints will be entertained after the deadline.
Rules & Procedure for providing photocopy/ annotated digital copy of assessed answer-book(s):
To promote transparency and credibility in the examination system, the College has extended the facility for students to obtain Photocopy/Annotated Digital Copies of their assessed and/or moderated answer books. The guidelines for availing this facility are as follows:
Students may apply for annotated digital copies only for theory papers of:
Continuous Internal Assessment – I (CIA–1)
End Semester Examination (ESE) and
Additional Examination
conducted by the College in the current academic session.
Applications must be submitted online through QualCampus, along with the non-refundable fee. No applications will be accepted after the due date, under any circumstances.
Once the annotated digital copy is issued, the student is solely responsible for its safekeeping. Please note that the annotated digital copy/ photocopy cannot be used to dispute or challenge the quality of assessment or the marks awarded.
If any discrepancy is found in the annotated copy, the student must report and apply within seven (07) working days of receiving it.
Students are free to apply for annotated digital copies for any number of subjects, as per their requirement.
Rules and Procedure for Revaluation of Answer- book(s):
The facility for revaluation of answer books is available under the following rules and conditions:
If a student is not satisfied with the marks awarded, they may apply for revaluation through QualCampus within the prescribed timeline.
The revaluation facility is available only for theory papers of:
End Semester Examinations (ESE) and Additional Examinations conducted during the current academic session.
- Continuous Internal Assessments (CIA) are not eligible for revaluation. Only scrutiny is permitted for CIA components.
- All students may apply for revaluation regardless of the marks obtained, including zero marks.
Students are free to apply for revaluation in as many subjects as they wish.
Applications for revaluation will not be accepted after the last date under any circumstances.
The effect of revaluation on original marks will be as follows:
Significant Change (≥ 10% of Max Marks):
If the increase or decrease in marks after revaluation is 10% of the obtained marks or more, the revaluation marks will be accepted as final, and the original marks will be considered null and void.Large Variation (> 25% of Max Marks):
If the increase or decrease in marks exceeds 25% of the maximum marks (excluding grace marks), a second revaluation will be conducted by a third examiner.
The marks awarded by the third examiner will be treated as final and binding.
5. Gracing Norms
Grace marks for passing: Up to a maximum of 1% of the Grand Total per semester can be added to any Course(s) to fulfil the passing norms. The benefit of gracing of marks under this Ordinance shall be applicable only if the candidate passes the entire examination of semester/year.
For SWD (Student with Disability), grace marks upto a maximum of 3% of the Grand Total per semester can be added to any Course(s) to fulfil the passing norms. The benefit of gracing of marks under this Ordinance shall be applicable only if the candidate passes the entire examination of semester/year.
Grace marks for Award of Class: Up to 1% of the overall marks of that class will be added to the Grand Total to obtain a 1st Class or 2nd Class provided that the student has not obtained Grace Marks for passing in any Course (Note: this applies only to the final Consolidated Marksheet).
A student will be entitled to 10 Grace Marks/ (0.1 in the GPA), which will be added to his / her Even Semester Marksheet in the academic year when he/she represented the College in sports, NCC, or cultural activities and was among the winners (1st, 2nd or Runners-up) or have reached the quarterfinals of any competition held by the University of Mumbai. Students who have passed all subjects will be granted (0.1) to their SGPA for that semester. In case of students failing in one or more heads of passing an examination, the benefit of grace marks will be granted to the extent of 5% of maximum marks allotted to a subject.
Grace Marks (as stated above) are not awarded for Additional Examination.
For Degree Class Improvement, the candidate must appear for the examinations of all six semesters for UG and all four semesters for PG. There is no scheme for performance improvement in any semester individually.

- Grades And Grade Points
The Grade Point Average (GPA) is computed from the grades as a measure of the student’s performance. The SGPA is based on the grades of the current term, while the Cumulative GPA (CGPA) is based on the grades in all courses taken after joining the programme of study.
SGPA = ∑gc / ∑c for the current semester, where g is the grade point and c is several credits for the course.
CGPA = ∑gc / ∑c for current and all preceding semesters, where g is the grade point and c is the number of credits for the course - Marksheets / Grade sheets are issued per Semester.
- Loss of original mark sheet by students: In case of loss of original mark sheet, the students can apply for a ‘DUPLICATE’ mark sheet. The fresh mark sheet issued to the student, in this case, will have the word ‘DUPLICATE’ mentioned in the top right corner with all the necessary details as mentioned in the original mark sheet.
NOTE: Error(s) in the hard or soft copies of the mark sheet (viz., name of the student, marks, SGPA, CGPA, grades, UID No., etc.) must be brought to the notice of the Examination Centre via the Principal / Vice-Principal within 20 days of the distribution/uploading of the mark sheets in the Odd Semesters and 20 days in the Even Semesters. No changes will be entertained after the lapse of these 20 or 7 days.
